Hi, I have a couple of current get Apple TV’s but I want to use an older 3rd gen in the office, solely for airplay from my MacBook Pro. Everything works fine, connects straight to network, signs into iCloud and iTunes purchases, but for some strange reason when I go to settings/about it says that activation has failed, this in turns makes the one thing I want it for, airplay, not work.
with earlier Apple Tvs, unless you had set the App up previously when you still had the remote, you cannot. You need the physical remote to navigate to the setup screen on the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs. Instructions here: Set up the Apple TV Remote app - Apple Support
